Establishing Your Social Media Presence – 5 Key Factors

Did you know that by 2030 the world’s population is expected to reach 8.6 billion? Currently, we’re at 7.3 billion.

So, what does this mean in terms of having a presence on social media?

A lot of people get discouraged when they hear the statistics. They believe everything is becoming overcrowded and once there are too many players on a platform it will be easy to get lost in the sea of profiles. People with that mentality are usually worried about the wrong thing for the wrong reasons. Being driven by fame and money will only get you so far.

You may be asking, what’s the right way to go about it?

Everyone is trying to grow their influence. If we take a step back from the often self-inflicted stress of having the right number of likes or followers, we might find our efforts of spamming posts or plead for follows better used elsewhere. Besides, fundamentally, spamming comments or asking strangers to follow your page is not the best way to go about building any sort of organic influence or a loyal following.

Think about the relationships you have in life now that you value most. How did you get there and what did it take for you and the other person to be able to enjoy the current relationship? Time, trust, and things you have in common are just a few of the contributing factors that may come to mind.

In short, both parties at one point in time decided it would be of mutual benefit to invest in each other. This idea seems to have gotten lost in a fast-paced world where establishing real connections is overrun with impersonal interactions, but it should still be applied when it comes to reaching the masses.

Here are five key factors that contribute to whether your social media presence stays on the rise.

Value – The content or product you provide should be worth something to your audience. How is what you’re offering going to make their lives or the world a better place? Find your niche. Everyone isn’t going to buy in, so focus on providing value to the ones who are.

Trust – Your followers follow you because even if they’ve never met you in real life they trust you. It may be beneficial to them directly or maybe it’s a belief or cause you have in common that drives their support. Whatever the reason, they trust you to provide value on some level.

Time – Any relationship worth having or that’s built on a solid foundation takes time. There’s simply no getting around it. It takes time for you to learn the right fit for your brand and then for your audience to find and connect with it. Remember, easy come, easy go.

Consistency – If you’re serious, you’re going to have to prove it to yourself and your audience by showing up, repeatedly. Don’t beat yourself up too much if you’ve had a few starts and stalls. It happens to the best of us. Be willing to explore your options and make adjustments to reach your goals of being consistent.

Passion – It all starts here. Passion will be the driving force behind everything you do and the motivation you need on a rough day. Your passion is usually the first gauge an audience uses to decide whether or not they find you engaging, which ultimately boils down to whether or not you have a chance of securing their loyalty.

Establishing your social media presence doesn’t start by focusing on growing your numbers at all. It’s about being able to personally connect with your brand and communicate that same passion by engaging your community. The last thing you want is a “following” that isn’t engaged with your brand.

The numbers don’t lie.
